Are You Using Graded Discussions?

D2L has identified a bug where feedback entered in rubrics via the Discussions tool is not being displayed to students in Grades.

But there is good news: there are two workarounds so students can see the feedback you are providing them in rubrics.

To find out more, please follow the jump cut.

Workaround 1: Grade Item

In order to allow rubric feedback to display to students in Grades, follow the steps below.

1. Go to Coursework > Discussions and associate a grade item AND rubric to your discussion topic.

2. Go to Coursework > Grades and associate the same rubric associated to your discussion topic.

3. To assess the discussion, open the topic in one browser tab and Coursework > Grades in another.

4. In the Grades tab, in Manage Grades, click the drop down arrow beside the name of the grade item and select Enter Grades.

5. Under Assessment, click on the yellow ruler icon.

6. Evaluate using the rubric here.
7. Click Save (or Save and Record to transfer rubric points value to the grade item).

Workaround 2: Class Progress
Even if students can’t see your rubric feedback in Grades, they can see them in their Class Progress view. Make sure you have associated a rubric with the topic you want to evaluate and evaluate using either Assess Student or Assess Topic from within Discussions. Make sure the forum and topic are visible (any that are set to not be visible will not be visible within Class Progress).

Students can then go to Course Resources > Class Progress and

1. Click Discussions on the left.

2. Under the forum name, click on the number of topics text link to expand topic display.

3. Under the topic name, click on the Details text link to expand topic details.

4. Click on the name of the rubric.

This should display the rubric evaluation with feedback to the student.

This works for topics evaluated with rubrics using the Assess Topic feature, as well as the Assess Student feature.

  • If you want students to see the feedback in Grades, please follow the first workaround provided.
  • If you would rather use the grading options within Discussions, please direct students to view their rubric feedback in Class Progress.
